DC Comics Superhero Goes Global

In Action Comics 900, the Kryptonian-born superhero Superman announced that he resolves to expand his never ending battle with evil to include not only the United States, but the world at large.

Superman has always been a global icon, upholding the values that make humanity great and combating the forces of evil and darkness at every opportunity. In recent years, he has become more worldly, and has adopted a stance that the entire Earth, not just rural Kansas and the city of Metropolis, is his true home. His struggles, and by association the struggles that we face in the real world, have become bigger than just himself and the United States. He represents all of us despite his virtually godlike superhuman abilities, and the challenges he faces on a day-to-day basis require a sense of judgement and a willingness to think outside oneself, a knowledge of the world that strives to include all cultures. He is the person we all hope to be someday, an eternal force for unity and good.

The decision to have Superman concern himself with a global ideal rather than an American one has met its share opponents, such as former presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, who stated on cable entertainment network Fox News, "... it is disturbing that Superman who has always been an American icon is now saying I’m not going to be a citizen. I think it’s a part of a bigger trend of Americans almost apologizing for being Americans."

Despite being a visitor from an alien planet, the man of steel has always been a representative for humanity at its finest. The Kryptonian Superman has forever stood for Truth and Justice, and he stands for those ideals now more than ever. The American Way is but one of many, and for a man who endeavors the world's problems, it is not always the right one.
